Overview

The NRSWA Unit O4 course gives operatives the knowledge and practical skills to reinstate sub-base and roadbase layers using non-bituminous materials in accordance with the Street Works Qualification Regulations (SWQR) and the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH). The focus is on correct material selection, layer construction, and compaction to achieve durable, compliant reinstatements and protect underlying utilities.

Training blends classroom theory with supervised practical exercises. Successful completion leads to certification and registration with the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR).

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Interpret relevant NRSWA/SROH requirements for sub-base and roadbase reinstatement.
• Select appropriate non-bituminous materials (e.g., Type 1/2, CBM/CBGM where specified).
• Prepare excavations following backfill, ensuring edge support and protection of services.
• Place materials in the correct layer thicknesses and achieve specified compaction.
• Manage moisture content and segregation to maintain material performance.
• Carry out quality checks (levels, density/compaction, surface tolerance) to specification.
• Apply safe systems of work to protect workers, the public, and buried apparatus.

Pre-Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but delegates should have a basic level of written and spoken English. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

Who Should Attend?

Operatives involved in reinstatement works on highways and footways following excavation, particularly those responsible for building sub-base and roadbase layers as part of the overall reinstatement process in utilities, civil engineering, groundworks, and construction.
