Course Unit: O6 Reinstatement of Hot-Lay Bituminous Materials

Overview

The NRSWA Unit O6 course equips participants with the knowledge and practical ability to reinstate footways and carriageways using hot-lay bituminous materials, in line with the Street Works Qualification Regulations (SWQR) and the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH).

Training covers correct material selection, handling, placement, compaction and finishing to ensure reinstatements meet durability, performance and compliance standards. The course combines theory sessions with hands-on practical assessments, leading to certification and SWQR registration upon successful completion.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Understand the requirements of NRSWA/SROH for hot-lay bituminous reinstatements.

• Identify appropriate hot-lay materials for different reinstatement scenarios.
• Prepare excavations for reinstatement, including edge preparation, bond/seal application and surface cleanliness.
• Correctly place and compact binder and surface course layers to required thickness and levels.
• Carry out joint preparation and finishing to ensure durability and compliance with specifications.
• Reinstate around ironwork, channels and other features to meet inspection standards.
• Check levels, gradients, compaction and surface finish against specification criteria.
• Apply safe working practices to protect workers, the public and underground services.

Pre-Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but delegates should have a basic level of written and spoken English. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

Who Should Attend?

Operatives involved in reinstating footways and carriageways using hot-lay bituminous materials, particularly those working in utilities, highways maintenance, groundworks and civil engineering.
