The NCO Level 1 Certificate is a 10 day, EUSR-accredited qualification designed for those starting a career in the water industry. Aligned with HSE guidelines and industry best practice, it provides the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively when supporting water network operations.
Successful completion enables registration on the Energy & Utility Skills Register (EUSR), with a CSCS-affiliated virtual photo card granting access to construction sites across the utility sector.
As part of the course, delegates will also gain:
- SHEA Water certificate (EUSR registered)
- Abrasive Wheels certificate
- Fire Control certificate
- Basic First Aid certificate
Training combines classroom learning with hands-on practical sessions, with continuous assessment and a portfolio to evidence competence.
Objectives
This course develops the awareness and understanding needed to work safely and effectively as an assistant in the water industry, including:
- Understanding health, safety and environmental practices in the workplace.
- Supporting the preparation and maintenance of a safe working environment.
- Assisting with the use of tools and equipment under supervision.
- Carrying out basic excavation support tasks.
- Understanding the importance of effective communication and teamwork on site.
- Developing awareness of industry standards and safe working procedures.
Pre-Course Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, but a basic level of written and spoken English is required. Delegates must bring their own PPE, including safety boots, high-visibility clothing, safety hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, two layers of flame-retardant clothing, and a dust mask.
