Overview

The NCO Level 1 Certificate in Network Construction Operations (Gas) is a 10-day, EUSR-accredited qualification designed for those starting a career in the gas industry. Aligned with HSE guidelines and industry best practice, it provides the essential knowledge and practical skills to work safely and effectively on gas network operations.

Successful completion enables registration on the Gas Industry Registration Scheme (GIRS) – mandatory for working on self-lay mains and services – and the Energy & Utility Skills Register, with a CSCS-affiliated virtual photo card granting access to construction sites across the industry.

As part of the course, delegates will also gain:

• SHEA Gas certificate (EUSR registered)
• Abrasive Wheels certificate
• Fire Control certificate
• Basic First Aid certificate

Training combines classroom learning with hands-on practical sessions, with continuous assessment and a portfolio to evidence competence.

Objectives

This course builds the core safety knowledge and practical abilities required for trainee operatives in gas network construction, covering:

• Locating & Avoiding Utilities – Identifying underground supply apparatus and sub-structures.
• Excavation & Reinstatement – Safe excavation of holes and trenches, preparation for reinstatement, and the safe use of powered tools and equipment.
• Pipework & Jointing – Preparing PE pipework, assisting with electrofusion and butt fusion welding, and assembling fittings and components.
• Highway Works Safety – Setting up and maintaining signing, lighting, and guarding in line with highway regulations.
• Additional Safety Skills – Practical training in abrasive wheels, fire control, and basic first aid.

Pre-Course Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but a basic level of written and spoken English is required. Delegates must bring their own PPE, including safety boots, high-visibility clothing, safety hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, two layers of flame-retardant clothing, and a dust mask.
