Course Unit: Network Construction Operations (NCO) – Level 2 – Main Laying (Gas)

Overview

The NCO Level 2 Diploma in Network Construction Operations (Main Laying – Gas) is a 10-day qualification designed for operatives carrying out gas main laying activities. It provides the knowledge and practical skills required to install, joint, test, and commission gas mains safely and efficiently.

Delegates can follow one of two pathways:

• Self-Lay (e.g. Multi-Lay)
• Distribution

Optional training units are also available for Escape, Locate, and Repair operations.

As part of the course, delegates will also achieve:

• NRSWA Units LA, O1 & O2 – including a SWQR card
• SCO Units 1, 2 & 3 – including a certificate and EUSR registration

Training combines classroom-based theory, practical workshop sessions, and portfolio building to demonstrate competence.

Objectives

This course builds the operational skills and technical knowledge required for gas main laying, including:

• Site Safety & Preparation – Creating an efficient, effective, and safe working environment, maintaining site security, and installing equipment for safe working on highways and sites.
• Excavation & Tools – Excavating and maintaining holes and trenches, and operating powered tools and equipment safely.
• Jointing & Testing – Performing electrofusion and butt fusion jointing (up to 180mm), and conducting specified testing of products.
• Commissioning & Installation – Carrying out gas mains connections and commissioning, and installing gas products up to 180mm.
• Teamwork & Communication – Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships on site.

Pre-Course Requirements

A valid EUSR SHEA Gas registration is required. Candidates should ideally hold an NCO Level 1 qualification. Delegates must bring their own PPE, including safety boots, high-visibility clothing, safety hard hat, gloves, and safety glasses.

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for operatives working in gas main laying, including those with on-site experience in water or multi-lay operations who wish to expand their skills to gas network mains work.
