Course Unit: SHEA Gas

Overview

The Safety, Health, and Environmental Awareness (SHEA) Gas course is an EUSR accredited programme designed to provide the essential safety knowledge required to work within the gas industry. It is suitable for new entrants and existing workers, covering the core principles of health, safety, and environmental protection across utility operations.

Successful completion results in registration on the Energy & Utility Skills Register and the issue of a CSCS affiliated virtual photo card, granting access to construction sites across the gas industry.

Training combines interactive classroom sessions with assessments at the end of each module to confirm understanding.

Objectives

This course develops the awareness and understanding needed to work safely in the gas industry, including:

• Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities – Duties under the Health & Safety at Work Act, CDM Regulations, safety policies, environmental management, and the role of regulators.
• Risk Assessment & Workplace Safety – Identifying hazards, assessing and controlling risks, correct PPE use, accident and near-miss reporting, good housekeeping, signage, and emergency procedures.
• Industry-Specific Hazards – Safe access to Above Ground Installations, lone working, gas escape response, safety in premises, highway works, excavation safety, confined spaces, and working near services.
• Equipment & Physical Hazards – PUWER and LOLER compliance, safe plant and equipment operation, ladder safety, overhead service awareness, and vehicle checks.
• Health Risks – Noise, vibration, manual handling, hazardous substances (COSHH), biohazards, and occupational health responsibilities.
• Environmental Protection – Waste handling, spill response, and minimising workplace environmental impact.

Pre-Course Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but a basic level of written and spoken English is required.

This course is designed for individuals working in operational roles within the gas industry, including operatives, supervisors, and managers.
