Overview

The NRSWA Unit O5 course provides the knowledge and practical skills to reinstate carriageway and footway surfaces using cold-lay bituminous materials in accordance with the Street Works Qualification Regulations (SWQR) and the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (SROH). The course focuses on correct material selection, preparation, placement, joint treatment and compaction to deliver durable, compliant reinstatements.

Training blends classroom theory with supervised practical exercises. Successful completion leads to certification and registration with the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR).

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret relevant NRSWA/SROH requirements for cold-lay bituminous reinstatement.
  • Select suitable cold-lay materials and understand their limitations and appropriate applications.
  • Prepare the excavation for surfacing, including edge preparation, cleanliness and bond/edge sealing.
  • Place and compact cold-lay binder and surface layers to specified thickness and profile.
  • Form, seal and finish joints, channels and ironwork surrounds to specification.
  • Verify levels, gradients, texture and compaction to meet inspection criteria and ensure ride quality.
  • Apply safe systems of work to protect workers, the public and buried apparatus.

Pre-Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but delegates should have a basic level of written and spoken English. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

Who Should Attend?

Operatives responsible for reinstating footways and carriageways using cold-lay bituminous materials following excavation works, including those in utilities, civil engineering, groundworks and construction.
