Overview

The NRSWA Unit O1 course equips participants with the essential knowledge and skills to carry out safe and compliant excavation work in the road or highway. Delivered in line with the Street Works Qualification Regulations (SWQR), this course ensures that excavation activities are performed safely, efficiently, and without damage to underground utilities or surrounding infrastructure.

Training is delivered through a combination of classroom theory and supervised practical sessions, where participants gain hands-on experience in setting out, excavating, and maintaining safe working areas. On successful completion, delegates will receive certification and registration with the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR).

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the requirements of the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA).
  • Prepare and maintain a safe excavation site in line with industry standards.
  • Interpret utility drawings and identify underground apparatus.
  • Excavate holes and trenches safely using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Apply safe systems of work to protect workers, utilities, and the public.
  • Backfill and prepare the excavation for reinstatement in compliance with specification.

Pre-Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but a basic level of written and spoken English is necessary. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

This course is ideal for operatives involved in excavation works on roads and highways, including those working in utilities, civil engineering, groundworks, and construction.
