Overview

This 1-day NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) Unit LA course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills to safely locate and avoid underground utility apparatus prior to excavation. Delivered in line with the Street Works Qualification Regulations (SWQR), the course ensures compliance with industry standards and helps minimise the risk of damage to essential buried services such as gas, water, electricity, and telecommunications.

The training combines classroom-based theory with practical, hands-on use of cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators (Genny). Successful completion leads to certification and registration with the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR).

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the requirements of the NRSWA and HSG47 (Avoiding Danger from Underground Services).
• Identify common underground utilities and associated risks.
• Accurately interpret utility drawings and plans.
• Safely use cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators (Genny).
• Carry out pre-excavation checks to minimise service strikes.
• Apply safe systems of work to protect themselves, colleagues, and the public.

Pre-Course Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but delegates should have a basic level of written and spoken English. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

This course is suitable for operatives and supervisors who need to locate underground apparatus before excavation works, including those working in utilities, highways, construction, and groundworks.
