The NRSWA Unit S2 course provides Supervisors with the knowledge and skills to monitor excavation activities in the highway. The unit ensures Supervisors can assess whether excavations are carried out safely, efficiently, and in compliance with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) and relevant codes of practice.
This qualification is aimed at Supervisors overseeing operatives who carry out excavation works. Candidates are not required to undertake practical excavation themselves but must be able to monitor quality, safety, and compliance. Successful completion leads to registration on the Street Works Qualification Register (SWQR).
Objectives
On completion of this course, candidates will be able to:
- Understand the requirements and procedures for safe excavation in the highway.
- Monitor excavations for safety, compliance, and quality standards.
- Assess the use of appropriate methods, tools, and protective systems.
- Identify unsafe practices and ensure corrective action is taken.
- Demonstrate competence through written assessment to achieve SWQR registration.
Pre-Course Requirements
No formal qualifications are required, but delegates should have a basic level of written and spoken English. PPE is required, including safety boots, hi-visibility clothing, gloves, safety glasses, and a safety helmet.

This course is intended for Supervisors responsible for monitoring excavation works carried out by operatives in the highway.
